Nearly everything in the Library (except for reference items and the librarians)
can be checked out and taken home. Your MSM ID card acts as your Library card,
and also gives you remote access to our online resources.
Collections
The Library has more than 20,000 CDs
and 2500 DVDs; these are supplemented
by nearly one million tracks of
streaming audio
that you can listen to online. We offer a substantial collection of
printed music, from solo repertoire
to ensembles of ten or so (for bigger ensembles, visit the
Performace Library), as
well as study scores for a wide variety of orchestral and chamber music. Our
books cover music (primarily
classical and jazz) and the other performing and fine arts, as well as
literature, history, philosophy, psychology, science, and more. Just off the
main reading room, there are racks of music
magazines and other popular titles
like the New York Times, the
New Yorker,
Time Out New York, etc.
The Library is home to the Manhattan
School of Music Archives, which includes recordings of many of the concerts
that happen here (you’ll find these listed in the catalog).
Facilities and Services
- WiFi and data ports are available throughout the Library. Off campus or on, your MSM ID card gives you access to various
online resources; in addition to the streaming audio mentioned above, there are
Grove Music Online,
MusicalAmerican.com, JSTOR, and
more.
- PCs are located at the back of the Library. Each is equipped with
- USB and headphone ports (check out headphones at the CD circulation desk)
- A CD/DVD drive
- Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers
- Microsoft Access, Excel, Paint, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word
- Finale Notepad (for the full version of Finale, use the Mac near the main circulation desk)
- Copy/Scan machines are located off the main reading room and near the CD circulation desk.
- A microform reader/printer is located near the reference desk.
- Our interlibrary loan service allows you to borrow from another
library almost anything we do not own. This service is free to you. In addition.
any of the full-time Library staff can write you a pass for admittance to
libraries ordinarily closed to the public (e.g., Columbia, NYU, etc.).
- A reference librarian is on duty Monday-Friday, 11-5, and Saturday, 9-5. At any other time, feel free
to stop by the library director’s office, located just off the main reading
room.
Fines and Replacement Charges
Due dates are stamped in each item. We send overdue and
recall notices to your student e-mail account; according to School policy, you
are responsible for checking your e-mail daily. In addition, we send an e-mail
alert to notify you what items you have checked out that are due the next day.
We send these notices as a courtesy; you are responsible for keeping
track of the materials you have checked out. You can check your current
circulation record by logging in to ManxCat, using the barcode on the back of
your School ID card.
For circulating materials, the overdue fine is 15¢ for each
day the Library is open, except for CDs and DVDs, which are 50¢ per day (15¢ per
day for precollege students). In addition, there is a $1.00 charge for returning
a CD without its paper sleeve. The overdue fine for two-hour course reserve
loans is 50¢ per hour. After your second notification that an item is overdue,
or if your fines are more than $10.00, you will be blocked from borrowing until
you clear your record.
The replacement charge for an item lost or returned
incomplete is the current retail price plus $15.00 for binding and other
processing. The replacement charge for an out-of-print item is usually $50.00,
to cover the cost of purchasing, cataloging, and binding a new edition.
