Widder String Quartet Competition
The Ruth Widder String Quartet Competition, funded by the Widder Foundation in consultation with faculty member Laurie Carney, honors the memory of Ruth Widder, whose lifetime of generosity to Manhattan School of Music, the American String Quartet and the Metropolitan Museum (among many others) has had a lasting effect on the cultural life of New York.
Taking place each spring since 2015, the Competition is open to all MSM student string quartets that have worked together for a minimum of two semesters and have prepared at least two complete, contrasting works from the standard repertory. This year the auditions will take place April 10, 2017; groups will play movements chosen by the jury from the two works, lasting approximately 20 minutes.
The jury (consisting of the members of the ASQ and one additional string faculty member) will choose a winner and a runner-up.
The winning ensemble will receive a $2000 prize and will perform both works; the runner-up will receive a $1000 prize and perform one work. The concert will occur on April 27, 2017, at 7:30 PM in Greenfield Hall.
String quartets who are interested in participating in the competition should contact Katie Dryden, chamber music coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org before Monday, March 13, 2017.
